New semester. So far, so good, it seems. I don't feel too overwhelmed or out of place--yet--which means I'm already starting to see an improvement from my situation at the beginning of last semester. That being said, the grading hasn't really started yet, so we'll see how things go in about 3 weeks. Gulp. So... Continue Reading →
More ideas for next semester. . .
Okay, here's what I'm thinking for comp I now: Beginning with a question of the day to get them writing each class; after a couple of weeks, ask them to generate questions and I'll pull them from a hat or something Journals I collect once a week (folders, not notebooks) Personal essay, with guided prompts... Mental note. . .
Don't forget about Jones' argument chapter in Writing Spaces next semester. . .
A few more teaching notes
Maybe it's not just me. . . replace journal with "informal responses" that students turn in when they are due as homework in 1213. Keep the journal in 1113, but make sure to collect it every week. Require journals to be folders instead of notebooks, though the responses can be either typed or handwritten. move rhetorical... Continue Reading →
Thoughts for next semester OR: what I’ve learned so far. . .
These are mostly notes to help me plan for next semester, so this post will probably be incomprehensible to other people. ENG 1113: Assignment sequencing: personal essay, op-ed text, rhetorical analysis, in-class exam, revision. the rhetorical analysis assignment has been quite difficult for students this semester. rhetorical analysis is a good bridge assignment to 1213,... What to do?
I have a student. No surprise there. I actually have about 100 students this semester. But there's something else going on with this student: she seems so sad. All the time. At first, it seemed to be a mixture of hostility and sadness, and I felt like that hostility was directed toward me specifically. She... Continue Reading →
You know. . .
what I miss right now? Doing my own work. Writing. Feeling inspired to be a researcher. Making progress. Attempting to publish, or at least dreaming of doing it one day. Exercising. Eating well. Watching Glee. Watching NCIS. Talking on the phone with friends and family who are many, many miles away. Feeling like I have... Continue Reading →
For the record
I successfully defended my dissertation on June 22 (yay), I made the appropriate revisions and submitted the diss to Ohiolink (where it will live happily ever after with all the other theses and dissertations written at Ohio universities) (double yay), I am in the throes of planning my courses for SWOSU (triple yay), and Dave and... And then. . .
Well. I have drafted chapters 1-4, we have settled on a defense date (June 22), and I am currently working through the inter-chapters (minimum of 3, perhaps as many as 5 if I can work it out). All in a day's--er, about two years'--work. Right?
I need
to get out of this writing funk. Everything was progressing along and then. . .BAM. Chapters 1-3 are drafted, I have 2 inter-chapters kinda drafted and ideas for the other 2. . .but chapter 4 looms over me. I just. can't. do. it. Can't bring myself to write anything. It's like I'm overwhelmed by choices... Continue Reading →
